Generate a Site Topic Report Using SEMrush Keyword Data

Introduction

If you'd like to generate a site topic report for a site to which you don't have Google search Console access, such as a competitor or a sales prospect, you can! You can download keywords from tools such as SEMrush or Ahrefs, or use keywords that you've got from another project, then upload them to Site Topic. This guide shows you how that works.

If you'd like to follow along, I rebuilt the report shown in the video with more keywords. This Reddit eCommerce topic report used 17k keywords. If you'd like to see a different use case of creating Site Topic reports from uploaded keywords, check out this article on getting the top UK home appliance brands.

From signing up to Site Topic you'll get 1,000 credits to use on any report you like.

Uploading SEMrush keywords to find topics

Log in to Site Topic. The first page you see will be the Reports view. Click on Generate Report and choose to upload keywords.

You'll be presented with the "Upload keywords" screen. Upload your keywords file and Site Topic will start uploading and working on your report.

Statuses

The report will initially show as Pending. Once it's running, it will show as Running. Once it's ready to view it will show as Succeeded and there will be a link to See Report.

Credit

If the numbers of credits you have is less than the number of keywords in the report, the report will initially say Not enough credit. That means that you'll need to head over to the Pricing screen -- in the top nav or just click on the Not enough credit -- to buy some more. You can check how many credits you have and on what you've used them in the Usage & Billing screen, under your name in the top right of the screen.

No need to upload the keywords again. If you go to "Upload keywords" screen, you can choose the keywords in question and click "Retry".

Checking out the SEMrush entities

I like exploring the top labels with keywords to get a feel for how the labeling has worked for this site. But it's simpler to just look at the top labels and label groups. You can also use the top labels with pages view to get a feel for how well the site handles deduplication for particular labels or topics. I love this view to understand if there are gaps in the site taxonomy where new pages would add a lot of value.

Sharing the report

You can share your report on Slack or with others with the "Public Access" toggle. Click on the URL next to it and it will copy it to your clipboard for easy sharing.
